Boar bristle vs nylon bristle: which bristle is best?

A bamboo handle is only half the story – it is the bristles that decide whether a toothbrush is completely plastic-free. Here is the difference between natural bristle (boar bristle) and nylon, honestly.

Quick comparison

Short answer: if you want a completely plastic-free toothbrush, boar bristle is the choice. If vegan matters most, you will have to pick a plant-based bristle – or accept that nylon is plastic.

What is boar bristle (natural bristle)?

Boar bristles are made of keratin – the same protein found in hair and nails – from wild boar. They are completely plastic-free and biodegradable, which means the whole toothbrush (handle and bristles) can be composted. The downside: it is an animal product and therefore not vegan, and it absorbs more water than plastic.

What is nylon bristle?

The vast majority of "bamboo toothbrushes" have nylon bristles – a plastic. The handle is then plastic-free, but the bristles are not. Nylon dries quickly and is vegan, but it does not break down naturally and can release microplastics as the bristles wear against the enamel.

Plastic or not – the important choice

The point of a plastic-free toothbrush disappears if the bristles are nylon. So always check what the bristles are made of, not just the handle. At BambooBrush the bristles are boar bristle (keratin) – completely plastic-free.

Cleaning and feel

Both boar bristle and soft nylon clean well. Dry, boar bristle is stiffer, but it softens when wet and then becomes gentle on the enamel. Nylon feels more even straight away. The difference in cleaning is small – technique matters more.

Care

  • Rinse the brush after every use.
  • Let it dry standing up somewhere airy – especially important for natural bristle.
  • Replace it when the bristles start to splay, roughly every two months.

Which suits whom?

  • Boar bristle – for you if you want a completely plastic-free and compostable toothbrush.
  • Nylon – for you if you want vegan and don't mind that the bristles are plastic.

Frequently asked questions

Yes – keratin is not plastic and is biodegradable.

Do natural bristles last as long?
